APA Division 15 Race and Diversity Committee Syllabus Challenge

Welcome!

Thank you for joining the 5-day anti-colonial educational psychology syllabus challenge!

Are you teaching a new course where you need to create the syllabus from scratch? Are you teaching the same class but are hoping to revise it? Whether you’re teaching a new or existing course, engaging in the process of creating or revising a syllabus requires us to actively reflect on who we are as instructors, the goals we have for ourselves and our students, our institutional requirements, and the approaches we adopt to achieve those goals.

Over the next five days, we will read and learn about anti-colonial and anti-racist frameworks, actively reflect upon our identities, and consider how we might revise our syllabi using an anti-colonial and anti-racist lens. Please find the focus for each day of the anti-colonial and anti-racist syllabus challenge below.

Day 1: Colonialism, Anti-colonialism, and Positionality

Day 2: Using Anti-racism to Dismantle Power and Privilege

Day 3: Teaching Philosophy: An Anti-colonial Approach

Day 4: Institutional Requirements: Land Acknowledgement Statements

Day 5: Course Objectives and Materials

We will begin each day with an introduction and a list of relevant learning objectives. The activities for each day will vary, but you can expect to have some readings along with reflections that you will be asked to complete using Padlet. The goal is for you to engage with the material at your own pace and for us to build a larger teaching community through our shared reflections. Although we have designed this 5-day challenge to take about an hour each day, we hope that you will continue to engage in anti-colonial work beyond this challenge.

The materials are created by the collaborative collective efforts of all the authors listed below and names are not listed in any particular order.
